Thousands of lives were suddenly ended by evil, despicable acts of terror.
The pictures of airplanes flying into buildings, fires burning, huge structures collapsing, have filled us with disbelief, terrible sadness and a quiet, unyielding anger.
These acts of mass murder were intended to frighten our nation into chaos and retreat. But they have failed. Our country is strong. A great people has been moved to defend a great nation.
Terrorist attacks can shake the foundations of our biggest buildings, but they cannot touch the foundation of America. These acts shatter steel, but they cannot dent the steel of American resolve.
America was targeted for attack because we're the brightest beacon for freedom and opportunity in the world. And no one will keep that light from shining.

Today is Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day, designated so because this is the day in 1973 the last of our troops left Vietnam - although any survivor will tell you that is hardly the case. Not all of them (POW-MIA) returned. Currently there are 58,261 (most of them KIA) on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall.
March 29, 1973 - That was 40 years ago today and only in recent years has the day been designated as memorable or the Veterans themselves recognized as deserving of long overdue respect. They deserved better than the silence and derision that greeted them upon their return from the horrors of war. Such were the times... they say... they that do not know... they that do not get it. Lives changed both abroad and at home... forever.
Even now people forget... Soldiers do not wage war. Soldiers bravely fight war. Soldiers bear the burden of war. Soldiers bear the scars of war. Soldiers pay the toll of war.
No event in American history is more misunderstood than the Vietnam War. It was misreported then, and it is misremembered now. Rarely have so many people been so wrong about so much. Never have the consequences of their misunderstanding been so tragic. -- Nixon

About this time in 2012, Dad rolled north on his Harley into Oklahoma and reunited with friends he made during his tour in Vietnam. It was a Vietnam Vet Reunion after 40 plus years.

40 plus years ago - Vietnam -- Sadly Dad's Vietnam buddy (pictured here on the left and on the right in the photo above) succumbed to a long illness before 2012 came to an end. Rest in Peace Sir and thank you for your Service.
I am the daughter and wife and friend to many Vietnam Veterans. They have my utmost and heartfelt appreciation for the service they rendered this country and my eternal respect.

They were Momma's boys. Daddy's sons. High school sweethearts. Big brothers. Somebody's Dad. Football heroes. Baseball stars. Fresh. Young. Agile. They were the embodiment of apple pie and ice cream, fireworks on the 4th of July, home-spun, home-grown, farm-raised, city-slicker, Chevy-driving, Harley-riding, blue-jeans-n-t-shirt America. They were our best and brightest.
BEFORE...
THEY WENT OFF TO WAR....
We shipped them away from America's promise, still wet behind the ears - out of our lives with tears, wrenched hearts and prayers. Duty called. They answered. They fought. They bled. Some died.
THEN...
THEY CAME HOME FROM WAR...
Unwelcomed by a silent and disapproving homeland - no parades, no flags, no confetti, no back-slapping speeches. Some braved the hissing, spitting gauntlet of mindless protest and disrespect.
STUNNED...
THEY STEPPED BACK INTO A STARK AND THANKLESS WORLD...
Standing in the embrace of a tiny knot of family whose prayers were answered, they faced a world they once knew which held no welcome and little promise. The world did not understand, could not understand and did not care.
SILENT...
THEY SHOULDERED FAULTLESS BLAME...
Some of them proud. Some of them bitter. Some of them broken. Most of them defiant. All of them survivors.
FINALLY...
THEY WEPT...
In rage. In tears. In silence... for the brothers in arms who did not come home and for those who would never come home and for the selves they left in a distant land. With firm resolve and stoic calm - they buried some who never witnessed the appreciation of their countrymen that was ultimately too little, too late.
EVER TRUE...
THEY ROSE OUT OF THE ASHES OF A SHAMED NATION...
They perservered. They overcame. They survived. Some of them. Vets proved the other they were wrong by living the dream and fulfilling America's promise.
NOW...
THEY TEACH US DAY-BY-DAY
About heroism. About respect. About principle. About patriotism.

Early salute to my favorite Texas Veteran

Texas - As the plans proceed for the 2013 Veterans Day ceremonies in which Dad aka PGR Ride Captain "Frosty" with the help of his PGR buddies and other patriots will once again figure prominently, I thought to share last year's ceremony at Crestview Cemetery in Wichita Falls. Most of us are moved by a Patriot Guard flag line at funerals and memorials. What has been incorporated here is the motorcycle element. The simplicity of bikers filing in on two wheels, flags streaming behind them and those same bikers (many of them Veterans) standing in silent respect beside motorcycles in what can only be described as profound reverence - well, it makes me proud. There are no words here except - thank you for your service and commitment - carry on.

2 Million Bikers to DC

And this statement pretty much sums it up...
Oklahoma Rider Report:
All I can say is WOW!!! What an amazing experience. I have no idea how many bikes were there but the DC police estimate over 1 million. Bikes were staged 10 to 12 abreast bumper to bumper and the line was at least a mile long.
So much love for America. Bikers were from all walks of life. White, Black, Brown, Red, Yellow. Every one a patriotic American. The streets were lined with non riders cheering us on and waving flags. Traffic stopped and people got out of their cars to join in the waving and cheering. Overpasses were full of fire departments. Cops stood by the side of the road at attention, saluting us.
Bikers definitely made a statement for liberty today and judging by the enormous show of respect and support, we were NOT alone. The riders may have did the ride but America sent the message! Don't let the mainstream media fool you. America is full of patriots.

A slight departure from ride posts... wishing my lovely Mom aka Nezzie aka Punk a happy 76th birthday - if not for her love and encouragement - none of us would be riding today... A friend of ours (Willie) said to me a long time ago that my lovely Mom had to have been the inspiration for Roy Orbison's "Pretty Woman". I could not agree more. We love you Mom!

Texas -- Today Dad aka Ted aka Frosty is celebrating his 77th birthday on this earth and the rest of us are celebrating the fact that we have such a man as he in our lives.
As for me, I am a lucky girl to have the one man I would have chosen out of all the men in the world - to call DAD.
Dad does not like mushy stuff so I will let photos do the talkin'.
I will say I wish you the brightest blessings the day has to offer - may you have a day filled with sunshine, Nezzie ever faithful by your side, the company of few good friends and of course - cake! Happy Birthday Dad!

I am my father’s daughter…
As a little girl child I dreamed of the day I would grow up to be a man so I could do guy stuff with Dad. In early adolescence I suddenly and rather disappointingly realized that was not how things were going to work out at all. Who knew being a girl was going to cause so much trouble? Defiantly, I found pleasure in tom-boyish activities. As a teenage girl I railed and rebelled against patriarchal dictate. As a determined young woman I struggled to find my way in a progressive world that was not my father’s world. So often that world fell short of my expectations. As a middle aged woman I began the elusive inner quest of self-discovery -- who am I, what do I believe, where do I belong in the grand scheme of things? More often than not, life’s great quandaries were resolved with a return to the roots of my ethics and principles. Time after time, my path has led me home, at least in my heart. I realized my check and balance system is in my upbringing – the boundaries of which are marked by respect for Mom and Dad. Now, not quite old but with enough of the shine worn off of my former idealism I know without a doubt I am simply and unequivocally my father’s daughter. And, I am happily content to be so. What that means is: I have settled into my real self and embraced the idea that the apple did not fall so far from the tree after all. Gender has nothing to do with it. I can be who I am with all my hard convictions and go about my days without apology or nuance or affectation – just like Dad. In a chaotic, directionally disturbed world I am fortunate to have a symbol of true north in my life – My DAD.

What follows is a video of the POW-MIA Recognition Ride 2011 (most photos taken from the back of the ride). This is the one rally we would never miss and this is the rally by which we judge any other rally... motorcycles, mountains and military appreciation - that's tough to beat in my books.

Sunday Buckhorn/Stove Prarie/Poudre Canyon Ride

We rolled out of the drive about 9:30am. The idea was to ride away from clouds and stay out as long as weather permitted. Along the rural routes farmers were busy plowing fields just in case Mother Nature decides to play nice and give us a bit of rain.
The skies were spitting rain as we stopped at the Beaver's Den (the best leather shop in the area) (on Hwy 34 just west of Loveland) and visited a bit. One of Tim's buddies from work and his brother were having patches sewed on. We shopped some and sure a couple of things found their way to the tour pak.
Afterwards, with an eye to the volatile skies we slowly made our way towards home. In the small community of Masonville we decided we were just not ready to park it so we decided to turn left and ride the Buckhorn/Stove Prairie Road (CO 27) north to the Poudre Canyon (CO 14). (Little did we know that this beautiful stretch of road would soon be altered by a devastating wildfire.)
We rode the Poudre Canyon east from Stove Prairie Road. Normally we would turn west and ride over Cameron Pass to Walden and beyond. Actually, we did turn west but the little black cloud around the first bend was shotting lightning bolts so we made a u-turn. We knew it but were sorry to see the Hewlett Gulch wildfire had done considerable damage in the area.
We rode out of the canyon and tempting fate, stopped for ice cream on the way home while the skies rumbled a warning. We reluctantly brought ourselves home thinking we would get the rest of the Poudre Canyon ride in next weekend.
Today's ride = 139.3 miles

UPDATE: These are photos of the Buckhorn/Stove Prairie/Poudre canyon area just days before the huge High Park wildfire ravaged the area beginning June 9, 2012. June 27, 2012 the High Park Fire is still raging and the majority of evacuees have yet to return to their homes and properties. July 6, 2012 the fire is contained but most of the area is now ravaged by flash flooding and Hwy 14 is closed due to a mud slide. The river is running black and sooty which is death to the fish and other wildlife. Stay tuned...

Actually, we did turn west but the little black cloud around the first bend was shotting lightning bolts so we made a u-turn. We knew it but were sorry to see the Hewlett Gulch wildfire had done considerable damage in the area.
We rode out of the canyon and tempting fate, stopped for ice cream on the way home while the skies rumbled a warning. We reluctantly brought ourselves home thinking we would get the rest of the Poudre Canyon ride in next weekend.

UPDATE: These are photos of the Buckhorn/Stove Prairie/Poudre canyon area just days before the huge High Park wildfire ravaged the area beginning June 9, 2012. June 27, 2012 the High Park Fire is still raging and the majority of evacuees have yet to return to their homes and properties. July 6, 2012 the fire is contained but most of the area is now ravaged by flash flooding and Hwy 14 is closed due to a mud slide. The river is running black and sooty which is death to the fish and other wildlife. Stay tuned...

Watch those candles! Dad is officially a 76er

Texas - Today is the 76th birthday of the guy we know as Ted/Dad/Frosty hanging out on this blog.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY DAD!
As usual he is busy. Today is the Fun Run and benefit for Cristy so you can bet he is smack in the middle of it. If you see Ted/Dad/Frosty out and about today (and, I am betting most of you will) be certain to wish him a great birthday -- and watch yourselves just in case somebody decides to light candles on the cake - hahahahaha!
