Good Eats Here, There and Everywhere!

This is a list of our favorite eating places in Colorado and Texas and those we have found on our rides and road trips in other states... Keep in mind, we do not go anywhere to eat that gets us out of our comfort zone (blue jeans and sneakers or do-rag and biker boots). No prissy "fork" rating system here... if an establishment made the list, consider it comes with our highest recommendation. August 2018 Update - Moving all eateries to this new page (photos coming) and trying to organize by state as well as adding new establishments since we have made the transition to Texas so stay tuned... As you likely know, food porn photos show up regularly in our blog posts. I am also checking links on the old recommendations to be certain they are still valid. Ride safe. Eat well friends. Ride on fat and sassy. We do.

FAVORITE EATERIES - COLORADO

Vern's Place
4120 W Cr-54G Laporte, CO 80535
(970) 482-5511
Website: http://vernsplace.com/#home
Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/VernsPlace1946

Vern's Place - In business since 1946. Charming and rustic, mostly dead décor (remodeled and updated in recent years and new patio). Always clean. Staff is friendly and efficient. Seat yourself and enjoy an ample serving of good ol' comfort food, breakfast served all day, bakery, gift shop and store on site, on the way to Rist Canyon, Poudre Canyon, Horsetooth Reservoir and Dam. We found Vern's in 2005 and became regular customers especially when we started riding the Harley as all those wonderful roads eventually led to Vern's. The cinnamon rolls and cinnamon roll French toast are amazing. Breakfast fare and Sandwiches are great. Pies are large and luscious. We love Vern's!

Last visit: September 2016 but only because we have moved to Texas (we will visit again every time we make it back to Colorado).

In business since 1952. Truck stop, gift shop and more. Home of world-famous cinnamon rolls. It's a biker rule in this neck of the woods, if you ride within a mile of JC - you have to stop. Great breakfast! Open menu. It is always clean and packs with locals and travelers on the weekends. I-25 near Loveland, Exit 254, the Johnstown exit — halfway between Denver and Cheyenne, WY. Trust me on this, EAT before you head into Wyoming... Posted: Summer 2008 - Last Visit: Fall 2014

In business since 1978. Our favorite mexican food place in the Denver area. Trust me - we tried just about all of them. We spent our first year in Denver looking for the best margarita with better-than-tolerable mexican food. This is it. Fun decor. Reasonably priced. The cream cheese chicken enchiladas are excellent, but so is everything else on the menu. The house Margaritas - yum! They do pack a punch. We don't drink and ride... so, this is usually a cage trip for us. There are a couple of motels close by within walking distance, if you do ride in. Posted: Summer 2008 - Last Visit: Summer 2014

BeauJo's Pizza
1517 Miner St Idaho Springs, CO 80452

In business in this location since 1973. Sure, they have locations all over Colorado now (including downtown Fort Collins) but the original location is an experience you won't soon forget. The decor is rustic mining, in one of the best little towns just off I-70 in Colorado. BeauJo's is the best pizza we've ever had -- anywhere -- with a huge variety of pies to choose from. Order by the pound and you better be hungry. Posted: Summer 2008 - Last Visit: Summer 2014

Savelli's Pizza

This tiny pizza parlor nestled on a corner is a short stroll from a motel we like in Manitou Springs, CO. We liked this pizzaria so well, we dined there more than once during one particular stay. The dining area is quaint and homey, not too fussy - just like we like it. The wait staff is friendly and efficient. This is one busy place. The pizza is excellent. The spaghetti is excellent. The egglant parmesan is outstanding. The beer was cold. What more do you need to know? Posted: Fall 2008 Last Visit: Summer 2014

Maggie's Kitchen

970-325-0259
Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Maggies-Kitchen/195326387179891
We rode into beautiful downtown Ouray, the rumble in our stomachs told us it was way past time to eat. We parked the ride and strolled down the street a couple of blocks before we spied Maggie's Kitchen. When we stopped in front of the place to look it over a little better, an elderly gent said C'mon up - it's the best place to eat in town. He said he'd been eating there for as long as he could remember and they had not killed him yet. Well, we laughed and told him that's all the persuasion we needed. As we mounted the stairs, he told us to go on in, straight to the order window in the back and said tell them Gilbert sent you. We strolled in and paused about half way back just to gawk a minute. The entire place, every inch of wall and ceiling is signed by the people who have visited Maggie's. Amazing! Otherwise the decor was low key, mostly galvanized tin and wood - our kind of place. We told the girl at the order counter that Gilbert sent us in with the highest recommendation. The girl giggled and said - Yeah, that's my Grand-Dad. Tim ordered a monster bacon cheese burger with fries. I ordered a smaller version of the same. The place was busy so we grabbed our drinks, and yes - signed the wall, then found a small table on the street side patio out front and got a kick out of watching Grand-Dad Gilbert work the crowd of hungry tourists strolling by. The burgers. Speaking quite literally - Oh My Goodness! They were cooked to perfection, juicy and tasty! Loaded with wonderful cheese (definitely not your standard slice)! We are still trying to remember when and where we have had a better burger. August 2011

Serious Texas BBQ

FYI: Also a couple of locations in Durango, CO
http://www.serioustexasbbq.com/
Being Texans we take our BBQ seriously. Unlike many Texas-theme joints up this way, Serious Texas BBQ is not a misnomer. Huge windows give the feel of an open air pavilion while the no frills dining area is set up with picnic tables. There's a patio, too and a great view of the foothills. The food is served up hot and tasty in generous portions on butcher paper. Try the pulled pork sandwich with cherry chipotle salsa. YUM! The sampler platter is plentiful enough for two (well, unless Tim is really, really hungry). Don't forget the cheesy potatoes. Oh and the green salsa (jalapeno and pineapple) is outstanding. And yeah, they offer all the salsas in a carry-home jar. ST recently began carrying Blue Bell ice cream for you southern folks with discriminating tastes. grin! Established in 1982. We have been dining at The Mason Jar nearly that long, since the Folks discovered it (probably in 1982). No vacation to Colorado or visit to Colorado Springs is complete without dining once or twice at this wonderful home-style restaurant. They are known for their chicken fried steak, real mashed potatoes and gravy but everything on the menu (which includes catfish) is excellent. Generous helpings. Reasonably priced. Casual. We prefer the original location: Located in Old Colorado City (a fun place) just minutes from Garden of the Gods, Van Briggle Pottery, lots of museums and Manitou Springs -- right smack in the middle of all the fun stuff. Nice place, cozy decor. Very clean. The service was prompt and friendly, the coffee hot and tasty and breakfast was great. Prices were reasonable. We'll stop by again sometime this summer and check out the rest of the menu... but for now - Marion's makes the cut. P.S. It's where the locals eat - always a good sign. A pleasant start to a ride in southern Colorado. The prices are reasonable, the staff friendly and attentive, it was clean and the food (breakfast) was good. The decor was older, cafe style with blue vinyl booths and a bar up front and lots of tables in the main dining area. There are some very nice, southwest theme wall murals. Lots of locals were dining here. Posted: Summer 2009 - Last Visit: Fall 2016

BIKER ALERT! Best damn apple pie I've ever stuck in my pie-hole says Tim! We enjoyed our pie and ice cream and really good coffee (even in the middle of the afternoon) on the front porch. There is a cozy indoor dining area. They also serve catfish and claim the chicken fried steak is the house specialty in this Biker-Friendly establishment. We will return for the catfish and something on the menu called Texas Toothpicks (beer-battered jalapenos and onions). Posted: Summer 2010 - Update: We did return! Catfish, ribs and pie! Homemade Ice cream - homemade waffle cones... lots of other eats - all served up quick and friendly. Small dining room but why bother? It is Colorado - eat outside! The shady patio in front has plenty of tables and benches. The creamery has been in business over 30 years - there's a single word reason for that. YUM! Oh, and there's plenty of paved parking round back. Posted: Summer 2010

The New Moon Bakery, located next to the historic Town Hall and across from the Visitors' Center, is usually a must-stop for us when traveling the peak-to-peak highway. They offer an excellent selection of home-made pastries, muffins, scones and cookies baked fresh daily, as well as quiche and assorted other breakfast and light lunch items. Much to Tim's delight the -regular- coffee is great although they offer a full espresso bar. The giant Jackpot cookie is a scrumptious concoction of oatmeal, cranberry, and white chocolate. We cannot get through Nederland without stopping at the New Moon. YUM! The cafe has a small indoor seating area, with free wireless internet as well as a cozy patio. Approximately 40 miles west of Fort Collins, CO, right on the road along scenic Hwy 14 in the Poudre Canyon, Glen Echo is a pleasant stop along your ride or drive in North Park. The coffee is good. The food is good, cooked to order (meaning you can get your burger the way you like it) and presented well. It is an open menu and all items are reasonably priced. And - they have pie! The staff is friendly and efficient. It is always clean. This is where the locals eat. The restaurant is bordered on one side by a nicely appointed lounge and on the other by a general store which carries a little bit of everything including souvenirs and gifts. Posted: Summer 2014

Brick House BBQ

Facebook: Brick House BBQ
We've ridden by this restaurant in tiny Mead, CO a few times, but never when we were hungry (can you believe that?). Well, we finally got by there when we were hungry. We were not disappointed. Brick House BBQ was a pleasant surprise. It is small and quaint, very clean and cozy, decor is typical Colorado lodge style. There's a small patio behind the place that looked inviting. We were early so the supper crowd had yet to arrive. We were ushered upstairs to a small table near the back door where a few locals were enjoying a beer and conversation at the bar. A soccer game was on the big screen at the bar and classic pop music was playing over the speakers. Our waitress was friendly, attentive and fast. The menu offered a good selection of American food, salads, burgers and of course - BBQ including everything from ribs, dinner plates and sandwiches. We ordered pulled pork sandwiches, sweet potato fries and a side of onion rings. The portions were generous and the price about as reasonable as you can get these days. The sandwich was served with the sauce on the side which was sweet and tangy with just a little heat. Later, the waitress talked us into dessert which was a huge portion of chocolate cake for me and coconut cake for Tim. No, she didn't have to twist our arms. We agreed both selections were delicious but the coconut cake was the best of the two offerings. YUM! Posted Spring 2015

FAVORITE EATERIES - TEXAS

McBride Land & Cattle Company
501 Scott Street Wichita Falls, TX 76301
(940) 322-2516
http://mcbrideslandandcattle.com/
Always a favorite, we revisited McBride's with the Folks on a recent trip to Texas. Of course, we arrived early before the evening rush. They specialize in steak and potatoes (dinner comes with a garden salad) so if you're looking for a gourmet experience - this isn't the place. I usually have shrimp. The atmosphere is always clean and cozy, the service is good and the prices are reasonable. Spring 2018

Green Frog Restaurant
420 North Main Street, Jacksboro, TX 76458

We have been dining at the Green Frog since before we were able to drive ourselves. It's country food cooked right and served right. We recommend breakfast (be sure to get biscuits and gravy) and the chicken fried steak and gravy. Stop in and be sure to say howdy to the group of bikers that will likely be sitting at one of the tables. Look hard - my Dad and mBSc friends are probably among them. Ha! Posted: Summer 2017

We found this café on a road trip recently. We wandered into Stephenville via Business 281. On the marquee in front of the building it was noted that Jake and Dorothy's was celebrating its 70th anniversary and it is still family owned! It is an interesting story. The café is quaint and cozy and clean! There's an old fashion bar just inside the front door. The food (we had breakfast) was excellent especially the hotcakes. It was served up hot and fast by a cheerful waitress. According to the menu their specialty is chicken fried steak and waffle-fried potatoes. And get this - the hours are late. Weekdays it is open until midnight. Weekends it is open until 2 am.

We found this restaurant on a recent road trip that eventually took us to Louisiana. But this was our first night's stop in Nacogdoches, Texas. Of course we were looking for catfish and we found it. And the onion rings were some of the best we have ever had. It was a busy place but we hit it just right and got seated near the bar quick. Before long there was a significant crowd waiting. No matter - the wait staff was friendly and efficient. Warehouse style décor. Clean and cozy. Summer 2018

Bevo's Drive In
4000 Wilbarger St, Vernon TX 76384

Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/bevosdrivein/
We found Bevo's after strolling through Summer's Last Blast Car Show recently. We've heard about their burgers for years and Dad recently reminded us about Bevo's so you know - we were there - and they were there - and it was a happy meeting. This might be the best old-fashioned burger we've found in Texas so far. Tim swears it's going to need a second opinion soon. Anyway, the burgers are hand-made to order complete with grilled bun. Despite how busy they were with car show traffic, the food and the service did not suffer. There was a wait but it was certainly worth it. Excellent. We found the food and the establishment to our liking. And Vernon is just a quick ride up the road. August 2018

For certain, there are a few major chain restaurants near the malls in the big (big is relative term here) cities of Wyoming (Casper and Cheyenne), but we typically avoid that sort of establishment when we ride. Shari's is a cafe-style restaurant with an open menu, serving breakfast all day, good coffee, great sandwiches, soups and salads -- excellent pie. posted: Summer 2009 - Last Visit: Summer 2014

Just about the only place we found to eat in Lusk, WY and we are glad we stopped... It's an old cafe, with cafe decor - 'nuff said. It was seat yourself. Breakfast was hot, portions were plentiful, reasonably priced and the bustling waitress kept our cups brimming with strong coffee. The place was booming with local business and travelers, including several bikers who unanimously agreed, after waving us down - it is a great place for breakfast. Oh my goodness! We've heard about Jake's for years when all our Texas/Oklahoma friends would ride or drive to Jake's. We finally got to Jake's one summer afternoon in 2017! It is - in a word - scrumptious! The rib plate is plentiful and that brick of fries! Excellent, friendly service, cozy décor and the a/c works! The only thing Jake's doesn't provide is a way to get your butt back on a motorcycle after a meal there. Last visit: Summer 2017 (projected next visit Fall 2018)

When in Texas, we ride for catfish. We have catfish everyday if we can. When we are not in Texas we want to hear from our friends that they have ridden for catfish. We've been going to Bill's since well... forever. We do not go here for the decor or the ambience - it is good catfish. Any questions? Update August 2018. Still good catfish if you like it thin and crispy!

Like I said, we ride for catfish. We've been going to the Peach Orchard since well... forever. Once again, we do not go here for the decor or the ambience - we go for the catfish. Some swear by the calf fries. Everybody likes the tartar sauce. Bring a big appetite and cash - they do not take credit cards. Summer 2017

JW's Travel Stop is a truck stop located at the junction of US Hwy 70 and Hwy 81 near the Red River in Oklahoma. We started riding to JW's with Dad. It has quickly become one of our favorite breakfast spots for sure. The food is great. The pancakes are dinner plate size and delicious. The biscuits are tall and fluffy! And they usually have pie! The coffee is hot and the waitress in sassy. Needless to say it's our kind of place. Décor is Truck Stop Café (recently remodeled) not to fussy but clean and cozy. Last visit: Summer 2018

What a pleasant surprise! The atmosphere was right out of a childhood memory of Sunday morning trips to the Pancake House with the folks. We had a good ol' country style breakfast with delicious buttermilk pancakes served up hot and tasty. The menu offered pancakes in dozens of different flavors. The coffee was good, the service was excellent and the prices so reasonable, we had to double check the ticket. It was busy (appears to be a favorite with locals). Posted: Summer 2009

We love a restaurant within walking distance of our motel when on the road. Jaker's was an excellent choice. Clean and quiet. The house margarita was as good as the bar tender promised it would be. My Malibu Coconut Prawns (shrimp) served with an outstanding chili sauce were great. Tim had prime rib. Both dinners were served up in generous portions and cooked to perfection. The salad bar had an excellent variety (not the same old lettuce and tomatoes). We didn't make the first happy hour, but we stayed long enough to make the second happy hour. Ha! Our excellent waitress made sure that third margarita qualified. There are several locations in Idaho and Montana. Posted: July 2010

FAVORITE EATERIES - MONTANA

The Montana Club

The Montana was located directly across from our hotel. It is actually a combination restaurant, lounge and casino. It is large and spacious. We were in the mood for a burger but the menu is wide open. I ordered the Cajun Burger which was a blackened patty with roasted red pepper, cajun mayo and pepperjack cheese. YUM! I believe Tim ordered something like the All American Bacon Cheeseburger. We also ordered beer and sweet potato fries which came with the best damn dipping sauce we have ever tasted. They called it a Hawaiian Creme Sauce and it's a chef's secret. I bet - double yum! They should bottle the stuff because it is good enough to drink. The wait staff was friendly and efficient. Our food was reasonably priced, served up in generous portions and presented well. There are several locations for The Montana Club in Missoula, Butte and Kalispell. Posted: July 2010

We found this little gem of a cafe after riding through Glacier National Park. It was clean and quiet, the wait staff was friendly and efficient. We had a couple of great burgers and an appetizer called jo-jos (deep fried jalapeno slices). YUM! Prices were reasonable, portions were generous. This is a favorite place with the locals and breakfast is supposed to be really good. FYI: By the way, if you stay overnight in Choteau, MT make certain you get breakfast before you leave - it's a loooonnnngggg ride south for eggs from here. Posted: July 2010

We stopped in Billings, MT for the night because of bad weather and because we wanted to have time to celebrate Tim's birthday with a good meal. We aked the desk clerk to point us in the direction of a good restaurant within walking distance of our motel. She said we could not go wrong with Fiddlers Green so me and the birthday boy strolled the few blocks to the pub and ordered a couple of beers and onion rings. Later, Tim ordered a hamburger while I chose a BLT. Both of the sandwiches were monster-size and loaded. The portion of fries on the side was huge. We could have made a meal by sharing either one of our sandwiches. And both orders were cooked to perfection. We spent a couple of hours there, munching and smoothing out the day with a couple more beers. The atmosphere was friendly and comfortable. The prices were unbelievably reasonable. Our waitress was good-humored and efficient. Did I mention the food was excellent? This was not just a burger joint, the prime rib and steaks that passed by on the way to another table looked excellent. Get off the beaten path and ride away from chain restaurants when you visit Billings, MT and seek out Fiddler's Green - you will not be disappointed. Posted: July 2010

Lance, at our motel recommended the Smokehouse. We loved this place as soon as we walked in the door and got a whiff of Mesquite BBQ and heard live music. We were seated immediately and served our perfectly chilled beers before we could crack open the menu. I ordered the beef brisket, Tim ordered a sampler platter. Tim had the pinto beans, I had the baked beans. Both were tasty. The potato salad was thick and chunky. The BBQ was fine. The service was fast, friendly and efficient. Our waitress was very attentive. The decor was western lodge cafe and very informal. The entertainer (never got his name) was great. He sang a selection of songs you rarely hear these days, kind of country folks songs like Moriah, Ghost Riders in the Sky and so on. We loved it. Posted: July 2011

Situated in downtown Natchitoches (nack-a-dish) with decks overlooking lovely Cane River Lake, the food here was outstanding. Let's call it Italian with a slight Creole flair - we had meat pies as an appetizer and eggplant parmesan! Delicious! We were seated out on a lower deck and even in July it was cool and pleasant. Beautifully appointed and the staff was friendly and efficient considering the size of the hungry crowd arriving minute by minute. We enjoyed the atmosphere and the food. Summer 2018.
